This water turbine we have designed is based on the problem that Venetians encounter while they are riding the gondolas. It is the lack of lighting on small canals especially during the night.

Therefore, we designed a Water Turbine Powered Streetlamp. Streetlamp is an important aspect to social element, it gives lighting that civil needs at night. And as we know, Venice is a city of canals. Joining both aspects, gives the ultimate solution, streetlamp powered by stream. The stream will rotate the turbine, giving kinetic energy which will then converted to electrical energy for lighting. The lighting helps outdoor activities at night easier and safer.

The streetlamp connects the Venetian’s activities with transportation, it fits with the natural surroundings of Venice, like the canals, the docks, and the ports. To keep people connected, we designed a mini game with levels where the users are asked to steer the water turbine with the steering wheel. We know that Venetians are competitive, even the city was created through the persistence and perseverance of the people back in the medieval times (Marco Polo). So we designed the mini game because we understand the competitiveness of Venetians. But it is not just a game, the steering gives more energy that the lamp need to light on night time. The champions are given the reward of gondola ride discounts. It is a win-win solution, the citizens get light, but also receives rewards for contributing, and the gondoliers get passengers.

To add its universal design value, we make dimming controls, so users with diverse vision abilities can maximize the use of our streetlamp. While for the style of the lamp, we took Renaissance and Gothic styles like the buildings by the canals. The lamp resembles a gothic medieval lantern and the bar is twisted. In short, our designed streetlamp took advantage of the built canals and the perseverance of Venetians, but is designed universally, and shaped into a Renaissance and Gothic style to match the built environment.
